History Of Halloween
Dressing up, games, scary movies and Halloween activities are all
popular on this, the spookiest of holidays. But where does Halloween
come from and why do we celebrate it?
Halloween and its traditions and customs date back the to ancient
Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts celebrated the beginning of
Winter on October 31st and November 1st was the first day of their new
year. Winter was a time of year that the Celts associated with death,
and they believed that on the night before the new year the dead roamed
the earth. They gave the name ‘Samhain’ to this
celebration
of the dead and they celebrated with bonfires, fortune telling, rituals
and costumes.
However, when Christianity became popular in the 800s Christians wanted
to change this to a Christianity based holiday. They changed November
1st to All Saints Day or All Hallows, a time to honor the deceased
saints and martyrs. After that the evening of October 31st became known
as All Hallow’s Eve or Hallowe’en.
Today, Halloween is still as popular as ever. People dress up in scary
costumes, attend Halloween parties and decorate their homes with
Halloween decorations. Children go door to door trick or treating
hoping for treats and there are many games and activities associated
with Halloween.
